The siwak stick is intriguing, but not everyone wants to chew on a root every morning. If you would like to discover this plant without changing your habits, there is a very simple option: a toothpaste containing its extracts, used with an ordinary toothbrush.

What is Meswak toothpaste?

According to the product sheet, this ayurvedic toothpaste is enriched with extracts of Salvadora persica, the siwak plant, and promises long-lasting freshness every day. It comes in a 100 g tube.

Salvadora persica, known as arak, is a shrub from the dry regions of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. Its roots and twigs have been used for centuries as sticks for cleaning teeth. Ayurveda, for its part, is a tradition of care and lifestyle that originated in the Indian subcontinent and today inspires many hygiene products.

Stick or toothpaste?

The two products are not rivals. The meswak stick is a raw object you prepare yourself, and very popular for travelling. The toothpaste, on the other hand, fits into your existing routine with no learning curve. Some people keep the tube at home and take the stick along on hikes.

How to use it

  • Lightly wet a soft-bristled brush and apply a pea-sized amount of paste – no more.
  • Brush for about two minutes, morning and evening, taking time to cover every surface of your teeth.
  • Gently brush your tongue too, or use a tongue scraper.
  • Spit out the excess, then rinse as you usually do.
  • For the gaps between your teeth, floss or interdental brushes remain essential: your dentist can tell you the right size.

For fresh breath

Toothpaste is only one part of the routine: drinking water regularly, cleaning your tongue and changing your toothbrush about every three months all contribute to a fresh feeling in the mouth.

Precautions

Before you start. Do not swallow: spit out after brushing. For children, ask for advice on a toothpaste suited to their age and watch the amount. Check the ingredients on the packaging if you are sensitive to certain components, and stop using it if it feels uncomfortable. Toothpaste does not replace check-ups at the dentist. Keep the tube out of the reach of children.
