Gardening, washing up, dry winter cold, hikes in walking boots: our hands and feet put up with a lot without us noticing. When skin feels tight, a good balm makes everyday life more comfortable. The one from Bionaturis often raises eyebrows at first, because its star ingredient comes straight from the vegetable patch: the potato.

What is potato balm?

According to the product sheet, Bionaturis potato balm is a Swiss skincare product for very dry skin on the hands and feet. Described as 100% natural and made in Switzerland, it softens calluses without leaving a greasy film. It comes in three sizes: 30 ml, 50 ml and 150 ml.

The potato (Solanum tuberosum) originates from the Andes, where it has been grown for thousands of years; it only reached Europe in the 16th century before becoming a staple on our plates. Finding it in a skincare product is surprising – and that is exactly what makes this balm so intriguing.

And the apricot version?

Bionaturis also offers a potato and apricot cream in 100 ml. Its product sheet describes a 100% plant-based formula with the fruity scent of natural apricot, which intensely moisturises dry skin on the hands and feet and absorbs quickly, with no greasy film. A good choice if you like scented skincare.

How to use it

For hands

  • Apply a small amount to clean, thoroughly dried hands.
  • Massage in, focusing on the backs of the hands, the knuckles and around the nails.
  • Reapply after each hand wash if needed, and before going out in cold weather.

For feet

  • In the evening, after a warm foot bath, gently smooth thickened areas with a pumice stone.
  • Dry well, including between the toes, then massage the balm into the heels and soles.
  • Slip on cotton socks for the night: the balm stays where it should, and so do your sheets.

Which size?

The 30 ml fits in a pocket or handbag, the 50 ml sits nicely by the sink or in a wash bag, and the 150 ml stays at home for regular foot care.

Precautions

For worry-free use. For external use only. If your skin is reactive, test on a small area first, for example the inside of the elbow. Avoid contact with the eyes. Do not apply to wounds or broken skin: if you have painful cracks or persistent redness, or if you are diabetic, ask a health professional for advice on foot care. Keep out of the reach of children.
