Compact oregano essential oil: powerful, so handle with care

There are essential oils you might give to a beginner, and then there is compact oregano. Its warm, herbaceous, almost fiery scent tells you straight away what you are dealing with: an oil with real character, worth knowing and respecting. Here is why we always recommend it with a few words of warning.

What is compact oregano?

Compact oregano, Origanum compactum, is an aromatic plant of the mint family, related to garden oregano and marjoram. It grows wild on the dry, sunny slopes of Morocco. As with many plants in this family, it is the flowering tops that are distilled.

According to the product sheet, our organic compact oregano essential oil comes in a 10 ml bottle and is intended for aromatherapy preparations. The item Compact oregano EO is described as having a powerful, aromatic scent. In our classification, compact oregano belongs to the phenol family. How to use it

Our druggist keeps it for highly diluted aromatic use and links it to a traditional use related to hygiene. In practice:

• Never alone, never neat: compact oregano is neither an oil to diffuse on its own nor one to apply as it is.
• For household cleaning: mix one drop first with a spoonful of soft soap or neutral cleaner, then dilute it in a bucket of water to give the cleaning water an aromatic note. Wear gloves.
• As an accent in a blend: one drop in a blend of gentler oils, such as citrus, adds a herbaceous note; diffuse briefly, in a well-aired room, preferably while you are out.
• For anything else, and especially any use on the skin, ask us first: we will tell you whether it is possible and how.

What about kitchen oregano?

Dried oregano leaves are still welcome in your tomato sauces and on your pizzas. The essential oil, however, must not be swallowed and is not for cooking.

Precautions

An oil from the phenol family: extra caution. Not for internal use. Never apply neat: it can strongly irritate the skin and mucous membranes. No contact with the eyes; wash your hands after handling. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, for children and if you are under medical care, unless a specialist advises otherwise. No prolonged diffusion. Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from light and out of children's reach.
