Lavandin super essential oil: relaxation and fresh-scented linen

More camphor-like and more generous than true lavender, lavandin super scents the home, the linen cupboard and moments of relaxation. Its origins, how it differs from lavender and ideas for use.

Contents

The great purple fields rippling across the plateaus of Provence in July are very often… lavandin fields. Hardier and more productive than true lavender, lavandin yields an essential oil with a generous scent that has long been found in linen cupboards and soaps. Lavandin super is one of its most widespread varieties.

What is lavandin super?

Lavandin is a natural hybrid of true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia). Botanically it is called Lavandula × intermedia or, as on our product sheet, Lavandula × burnatii; the "×" sign points to its hybrid origin. "Super" refers to a particular cultivated variety.

From its two parents it inherits a scent that is both floral and camphor-like: less refined than true lavender, rounder than spike lavender. That is exactly what makes it a classic for fresh linen and scented cleaning products. In our classification, lavandin super belongs to the monoterpenols, a family presented in our guide to essential oil families.

According to the product sheet, our lavandin super essential oil is organic and comes in a 10 ml bottle.

How to use it

Our druggist recommends it for diffusion or diluted massage, for a relaxing atmosphere and the scent of clean linen.

In a diffuser

  • Four to five drops in a diffuser, following the instructions, for a relaxed mood at the end of the day.
  • Diffuse for 15 to 20 minutes, then switch off and air the room.

In a diluted massage

  • Mix two drops with a tablespoon of vegetable oil, such as sweet almond oil.
  • Gently massage the neck, shoulders or soles of the feet for a moment of relaxation.
  • Test the blend in the crook of your elbow first and wait 24 hours.

For linen and wardrobes

  • Put three drops on a cotton square or an untreated wooden ball and slip it between stacks of sheets.
  • Revive a sachet of dried flowers with one or two drops when its scent fades.
  • Avoid letting drops touch delicate fabrics directly, as they could stain.

Precautions

Keep in mind. Do not swallow, do not apply undiluted to the skin. Avoid contact with the eyes. Lavandin, more camphor-like than true lavender, does not replace it for every use: ask for advice before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for a child or if you are receiving medical treatment. Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from light and out of the reach of children.
