Lemon eucalyptus essential oil: a fresh scent for summer days
Half eucalyptus, half lemongrass: lemon eucalyptus fills the air with a fresh lemony scent and, well diluted in a massage oil, makes for a relaxing moment. Uses and precautions.
Contents
The name often surprises people: you expect the typical camphor-like smell of eucalyptus, and instead a lemony scent close to lemongrass rises from the bottle. Lemon eucalyptus is one of the most pleasant essential oils for long summer evenings, whether in a diffuser on the terrace or in a massage oil after a busy day.
What is lemon eucalyptus?
Like most eucalyptus trees, this slender, smooth-barked tree is native to Australia and belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). Today it is grown in many warm regions of the world. Its crushed leaves release a characteristic lemony scent, quite unlike other eucalyptus species.
According to the product sheet, our lemon eucalyptus essential oil, Eucalyptus citriodora, is an organic oil obtained by distilling the twigs and leaves, in a 10 ml bottle. The sheet notes that its use requires the advice of a specialist, while describing it as "very pleasant". We classify it in the terpene aldehyde family – our sheet on essential oil families tells you more about this group. Two further references complete the range: lemon eucalyptus essential oil, "with a fresh, lemony scent", and organic lemon eucalyptus essential oil, 10 ml, described as fresh.
How to use it
In a diffuser
- Add a few drops to your diffuser and let it run for 15 to 20 minutes, indoors or on a sheltered balcony.
- Blend it with lavender or lemon for a summery atmosphere.
- Air the room between sessions and let pets leave the room if they wish.
For a relaxing massage
- Oils rich in aldehydes can irritate the skin: dilute it generously in a vegetable oil and ask us for the right ratio.
- Test your blend in the crook of your elbow and wait 24 hours.
- Massage the calves, shoulders or back after sport or a long walk – the fresh scent makes this moment of relaxation all the more pleasant.
Precautions
To enjoy it with peace of mind. Never apply this oil neat and never swallow it. Avoid the eyes, mucous membranes and irritated skin; stop if any redness appears. During pregnancy, breastfeeding, for a child or if you are on medication, ask for advice before any use. Keep the bottle closed, somewhere cool and out of the reach of children.
