Alibaba et les 40 voleurs: a fruity infusion with green tea

“Open sesame!” The magic words from the tale of Ali Baba have echoed down the centuries since the French orientalist Antoine Galland introduced the story to Europe in the early 18th century, in his translation of the Thousand and One Nights. This tale of hidden treasure gives its name to one of our infusions. There is no cave and no thieves in the tin, just a blend of fruit, flowers and tea that invites you on a little journey too.

What is in the Alibaba et les 40 voleurs infusion?

According to the product sheet, it contains:

• hibiscus, which gives the cup its ruby colour and tangy note;
• rosehip shells, the fruit of the wild rose;
• apple pieces, for roundness;
• green tea;
• sunflower blossoms and rose petals, which add a floral touch and pretty colours to the dry blend;
• flavourings.

It is therefore a hybrid blend, halfway between a fruit infusion and a flavoured tea. The green tea has one practical consequence worth knowing: unlike a pure fruit infusion, this drink contains caffeine.

How to prepare it

Our druggist recommends following the instructions on the product sheet:

• Use 3 to 4 g for 3 dl of water, about one large mug.
• Bring the water to 100 °C and pour it over the blend.
• Steep for 6 to 10 minutes, then strain.
• Taste it: if the cup seems a little too strong, shorten the steeping time slightly next time; if you prefer it fruitier, go the full 10 minutes.

A few serving ideas

• Plain, to appreciate the balance between tangy hibiscus and mellow apple.
• With a spoonful of honey, if you like sweeter drinks.
• Chilled and served over ice with a slice of orange, for a summer afternoon.

Precautions

Contains green tea. This infusion is therefore not caffeine-free: if you are sensitive to caffeine, enjoy it during the day. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, for a child or if you are taking medication, ask for advice before drinking it regularly.
