True lavender floral water: a mist, skin care and soft scent

One breath is all it takes to find yourself on a Provençal plateau in July. The scent of lavender is one that everyone recognises, and many associate it with clean laundry or their grandmother's wardrobe. As a floral water, it becomes lighter and softer, and is just as much at home in the bathroom as in the bedroom.

What is true lavender floral water?

True lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, goes by several names: true lavender, fine lavender or English lavender. A member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), like thyme and rosemary, it likes dry soil and grows naturally at altitude, particularly in the mountains of southern France. It should not be confused with lavandin, a larger hybrid with a more camphor-like scent. Its name is often linked to the Latin lavare, to wash, a reminder that it was used to scent bathwater and linen.

According to the product sheet, this is a true lavender (fine lavender) hydrosol in a 200 ml bottle. A hydrosol is the water collected when a plant is distilled; gentler than an essential oil, it is used undiluted. The sheet describes its external use: on a cotton pad, as a compress or as a fine mist.

How to use it

Our druggist recommends it as a mist, a compress or an external skin care product. A few ideas:

• Facial toner: morning and evening, sweep a soaked cotton pad over clean skin, then apply your cream.
• Scented mist: spray it over your face with your eyes closed, or into the room for a soft, restful atmosphere at the end of the day.
• Linen and pillows: a light spray on a pillowcase or before ironing scents the fabric. Test on an inconspicuous area first.
• Compress: moisten a clean cloth and place it on the back of your neck or your forehead for a few minutes, for a moment of relaxation.
• Clay mask: use it instead of water to mix a clay, such as our Argiletz white clay, until you have a smooth paste.

Precautions

A few simple rules. Gentle as it is, a floral water may not suit every skin: test it in the crook of your elbow before first use. Avoid direct contact with the eyes. Ask for advice before using it on a young child, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you are taking medication. Close the bottle tightly after each use and keep it somewhere cool and dark; if the smell or appearance changes, stop using it.
